Rami Malek won the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in the Leading Role in a Motion Picture for his interpretation of Queen’s frontman Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody on Sunday.
After taking the stage, the actor gave a speech about how playing Mercury has empowered him and has taught him how to live his life fully.
He said: “I thank Queen and Freddie Mercury…I get some power from him that is about stepping up and living your best life, being exactly who you want to be, and accomplishing everything you so desire. And I feel that and he allows us all to feel that, so this is, again, for him. Thank you very much. ”
Lucy Boynton, Rami Malek’s girlfriend, was present at the ceremony. The two have recently confirmed to be in a relationship born during the filming of Bohemian Rhapsody.
Boynton, 25, in fact, played Freddie’s friend Mary Austin in the movie.
Directed by Bryan Singer with a budget of about 50 million dollars, Bohemian Rhapsody was one of the most successful movies of 2018, earning more than 817 million dollars worldwide.
The movie is a celebration of Queen, their music and Freddie Mercury’s talent, and showcases the band’s journey from the foundation in 1975 to 1985, the year of their consecration with the “Live Aid” performance at the Wembley Stadium in London.
The project had been in the talks since 2010 with Sacha Baron Cohen set to play the main role. However, due to differences with the producer, the British actor decided to let go of the role. The movie was then put under wraps until Malek was cast in November 2016.
The music for the film was directed by John Ottoman. The film also stars Ben Hardy, Mike Myers and Joseph Mazzello among others.
The other nominees for the SAG Award in the same category were Christian Bale (Vice), Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born), John David Washington (BlackkKlansman) and Viggo Mortensen (Green Book).
Glenn Close won the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role for her latest movie, The Wife.
Rami Malek also recently won a Golden Globe for his role in the film.
