A new trailer for “Aladdin” was released during the Grammy Awards ceremony on Sunday giving the audience a chance to take a look at Will Smith’s Genie for the first time.
The movie is the highly-anticipated live-action remake of 1992 Disney’s classic “Aladdin,” and other than Smith in the role of the Genie it features Mena Massoud as the eponymous protagonist and Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine.
Nasim Perdad and Billy Magnussen have also been confirmed as part of the cast, portraying respectively characters Dalia and Price Anders.
While Genie was originally supposed to be shown as a human, it was later decided for him to maintain the same appearance as in the cartoon, where he was dubbed by Robin Williams.
About his character and how difficult it was to try and live up to the expectations of the public, still very much fond of Williams’ performance, Will Smith said: “Robin Williams infused the character with his timeless version.
“I started feeling confident about delivering a homage to him, musically different. Flavours of the character being different and unique in different lane versus trying to complete. I think it will stand out unique in the Disney world.”
However, fans from all over the world seem to be underwhelmed by the look of the new Genie, and numerous memes have started to surface and spread on social media.
The movie, directed by Guy Ritchie, will feature new versions of the 1992 original songs as well as completely new music composed by Alan Menken.
It is set to be released on May 24th 2019.
