Country singer Granger Smith has lost his youngest child, 3-years-old River, due to a drowning accident at home.

The artist shared the shattering news on Instagram on Thursday, saying the whole family is devasted and that the little boy’s light will forever be in his and his wife Amber’s heart.

He said: “I have to deliver unthinkable news. We’ve lost our youngest son, River Kelly Smith. Following a tragic accident, and despite doctor’s best efforts, he was unable to be revived.

“Amber and I made the decision to say our last goodbyes and donate his organs so that other children will be given a second chance at life. […] If there are words to say more, I cannot find them in this moment.

“Love the ones close to you. There has never been a more difficult moment for us than this.”

I have to deliver unthinkable news. We’ve lost our youngest son, River Kelly Smith. Following a tragic accident, and despite doctor’s best efforts, he was unable to be revived. Amber and I made the decision to say our last goodbyes and donate his organs so that other children will be given a second chance at life. Our family is devastated and heartbroken, but we take solace in knowing he is with his Heavenly Father. Riv was special. Everyone that met him knew that immediately. The joy he brought to our lives cannot be expressed and his light will be forever in our hearts. If there are words to say more, I cannot find them in this moment. Love the ones close to you. There has never been a more difficult moment for us than this. . . In lieu of flowers or gifts, please send donations to Dell Children’s Medical Center in River’s name. The doctors, nurses and staff have been incredible.

Jay Jones, Granger Smith’s representative, has confirmed that River drowned at the family home. His organs have been donated to Dell Children’s Medical Center of Central Texas.

Drowning accidents are not as rare as they may seem.  According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, nearly 1000 children die every year due to drowning. Babies and toddlers aged 0 to 4 are highly at risk, as they can drown within seconds.

To decrease drowning rate, it is beneficial to teach children to swim around the age of 1. It is advisable to get a paediatrician’s guidance on whether the child is developmentally ready to take swimming lessons.

Dozens of Granger Smith’s fellow country musicians and celebrities have expressed their condolences to the grieving family. Alpine ski racer Bode Miller and his wife Morgan are among them.

The Millers lost their 19-month-old daughter Emeline, called Emmy, to a similar drowning accident in June 2018. The little girl drowned while playing in the neighbour’s pool.

The couple is actively working on raising awareness on drowning hazards and is promoting water safety for children in order to avoid tragedies like the one which has struck Emmy and Granger Smith’s son River.

They are urging parents to teach their children how to swim just like their son Easton, who is taking lessons five days a week for ten minutes.
